BURBRIDGE, USAF, RET. LT. COL. LEO M., 90

Ocala - Lt. Col. Leo M. Burbridge USAF RET. passed away on Sunday, June 3rd one month shy of his 91st birthday. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, he grew up in Syracuse and graduated from Syracuse University with a Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1939 amidst the depression years of the 1930's. 1941 was an eventful year as it encompassed the two great loves of his life. On July 12th of that year he married his devoted wife Carolyn and entered the US Army Air Corp at Mitchell Field on Long Island. During the war he was attached to the 487th Bomb group in England. He had the pleasure of meeting Col. Bernie Jr. the author of 12 0'Clock High along with Bartlet Sy Lay. The movie version played by Gregory Peck was a composite of him and a few other "Base Adjutants". He donated many pictures, base memorabilia and his book on the 487th to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum outside of Savannah, Georgia. Following the war he was executive assistant at the Pentagon for the Undersecretary of the Air Force during the Truman years. During this time, he co-authored "Strategic and Critical Materials in Latin America"; U.S. Gov't pub. W.D. 1947. In the 1950's he achieved an MBA from Harvard and was the controller for the 39th Air Division Far East Air Forces spending 18 months in Northern Japan separated from his family. Retiring from the service in the late 60's, he began his civilian career by joining Raytheon Corporation in an executive capacity and then went on to affiliate with Eastern Airlines, as Manager of Future Operations where he had the pleasure of meeting and working with former astronaut Frank Borman and helped in the planning of the Tampa airport. Retiring to Ocala around 1980 he enjoyed his retirement years in the home that he loved with his devoted wife by his side. Survived by his loving wife Caroloyn E. Burbridge, son and daughter-in-law Robert and Debbie Burbridge and daughter and son-in-law Carol and Bob Feaster. Funeral services for Mr. Burbridge will be held Thursday, June 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. at HIERS FUNERAL HOME, 910 SE Silver Springs Blvd. with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Loring, officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park with Full Military Honors provided by the United States Air Force.
