Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He began his Civil War service with a commissioned of Lieutenant Colonel of the 9th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in 1861. Soon after his entering the Union Army his unit was transferred to Illinois, as a majority of the enlistees were actually from that state. Re-designated the 59th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, he led his men through the Battles of Cornith and Pea Ridge. In the latter battle he was thrown from his horse and temporarily paralyzed. Upon recovery, he proved to be unfit for field service, and he resigned in January 1863. He rejoined the Union war effort a while later, serving first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th Veterans Reserve Corps, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Veterans Reserve Corps. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in all the campaigns of the Southwest, and for conspicuous discipline and gallantry at tje battle of Pea Ridge, Ark". He was mustered out of the Volunteers service in March 1866. Later that year was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the post-war Regular Army, serving until he was honorably discharged in 1870.
