Jerome Dudley Gilbert, 73, of rural Bloomfield died at 12:39 a.m. February 1, 2018 at his daughter's home in Urbandale surrounded by his family.

He was born December 21, 1944 in Chicago, IL to William Clinton and Mary Elizabeth Wheeler Gilbert. He married Cherie Yates on June 22, 1968.

Jerry had an Associate's Degree in Applied Science and was a Journeyman Die and Fixture Maker. He worked 23 years for Rexnord-Lund where he was President of United Steel Workers Local #6438 for eleven years. He taught for 23 years at Indian Hills Community College where he received the Outstanding Service Award and the Iowa Technical Teacher of the Year Award in 1995.

He was a member of Zion Community Church of God and was a devoted Christian. He was an avid street rodder and never missed Good Guys or the Quincy Color Run in Quincy, IL in 31 years.

Surviving is his wife, Cherie; a daughter, Jennifer Cherie (Jason) Hobbs of Urbandale; a son, Joseph Yates (Kara) Gilbert of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, Taylor (Lauren), Madelyn, Noah, Owen and Drew Hobbs, Kaloe and Joseph James Gilbert; two brothers, Richard (Julie) Gilbert of Chicago, IL and Fred Gilbert of Ottumwa; a brother-in-law, John Thorne of Washington, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Thorne and a sister-in-law, Carol Gilbert.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Community Church of God with Pastor Jesse Elkins officiating. Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation will begin after 10 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be used in a scholarship in Jerry's name.
