Born Alfred Henry Fear in Old Salisbury, England, he immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of ten. He joined the Toronto Argonauts in 1919 and played with them until 1926. He then joined the Montreal Winged AAAs in 1927 and then played with the Hamilton Tigers from 1928 to 1932. He participated in four Grey Cup Winning Games (1920, 1921, 1928, and 1929) and was part of three Grey Cup Winning Teams (1921, 1928, and 1929). In addition to football, he also played hockey, was a runner-up Welterweight Champion of Canada in boxing and stroked for the Toronto Argonaut Rowing Club, with whom he won several victories with the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1967, and into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. He passed away in St. Catharines at the age of 76.
