Marvin Pound Sr., Mayor and Senator Dies In Sparta
Sparta, Ga.- Marvin Gilbert Pound Sr., 87, of 512 Rabun St., died Saturday in a Putnam County hospital. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at Sparta Baptist Church with the Revs. Herman Williams, W. C. Corley and Steve Dial officiating. Burial will be in the Sparta Cemetery. Mr. Pound was a lifelong resident of Hancock County, a veteran of World War I and a member of the Sparta Baptist Church. He owned and operated an insurance agency and a bank. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives for six years and the Georgia Senate for two years. A member of the Scottish Rite Masons, he was president of the Georgia Boy Scout Council two years and received the Silver Beaver Award and Silver Antelope Award for his region. He was also a former councilman and mayor of Sparta. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Camille Berry Pound; one son, Marvin G. Pound Jr., Sparta,; and one daughter, Mrs. Oscar M. Peden, Sparta. Friends may call at the residence or Patterson's Funeral Home in Sparta until 2 p.m. and then at the church.
