Capitalist - He made his fortune in the lime industry. Santa Cruz county contained high quality limestone deposits, much timber for fuel to burn the lime, and coastal access for shipping the product. He had extensive land holdings statewide, on the West Coast and in Canada.
When Henry married Harriet Carpenter on Nov 2, 1854 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, his residence was listed as San Francisco. By 1855 he was back in San Francisco. The Cowells had six children: Roland (1857-1858); Ernest Victor (1858-1911); Isabella Marion (1858-1950); Samuel Henry (1861-1955, also known as S.H., or as Harry, when younger); Sarah Elizabeth (1863-1903); and Helen Edith (1866-1932). Only Ernest married, he had 2 wives and no descendants.
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton, California was named in his honor.
S.H. Cowell was the last of his children and he died in 1955. The S.H. Cowell Foundation is a not-for-profit organizaation that has $153 million worth of assets under management. The foundation makes grants and investments to non-profit organizations promoting the betterment of families and communities in Northern California. It was founded in 1956 and is based in San Francisco, California.
