After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country for four years during the Korean War conflict. After service in the military he continued his education obtaining his Bachelor's Degree and then worked for the U.S. Government holding different positions over the years with his last position working with the Department of Navy until his retirement.
He met and married the love of his life Doris Mabel Martin Welch and they were happily married for many years until her untimely passing in May 2014. They were blessed to have two sons, George Jr. and Gary.
George participated in the local baseball and softball leagues as a young man and followed professional baseball and football. His hobbies included boating, fishing, crabbing and oystering as well as spending memorable times with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed, but his family is taking solace in knowing he has reunited in heaven with his beloved wife.
George is survived by his sons George Welch Jr. (Vicky) and Gary Welch (Jennifer), grandchildren Michael Welch (Kelli), Matthew Welch (Ashley), Lauren Welch and Jenna Welch, great-grandchildren Morgan, Reagan, Logan, Leo, and Scarlett Welch, nieces Shirley Herbert, Bonnie Lewis, Nan Clavel-Forte, nephews Al Clavel Jr. and Ron Howard. Along with his beloved wife Doris and his parents, Francis and Marian, he was preceded in death by his siblings Carita Howard (Louis), Elizabeth Clavel (Al), Jean Henderson (Edmond), Woodrow Welch (Kit), Webster Welch and Guy Welch and his niece Mary Jaxtheimer.
The memorial service and burial will be limited to family.
