John thereafter married Margaret Gilling on January 2, 1983, and his family expanded to include Mary (David) Schewitz of Naples, Florida, John (Mary Monahan) Gilling of Green Bay, Christopher (Lynn) Gilling of Green Bay, Thomas Gilling of Green Bay, Paul Gilling of Green Bay, Barbara (Nick) Danison of Green Bay, and Robert Gilling Jr. of Hilton Head, South Carolina, and by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Margaret died on August 6, 2011.
John proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. He began a lifelong career in the furniture business working at Maloney-Manley Furniture in Green Bay. He later moved to Hudson, Ohio to continue his career as a manufacturer's representative for several fine furniture companies until his retirement.
After retiring, John and Marge returned to De Pere to enjoy spending time with family and friends. He was a lifelong Packer fan, musician and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and spending time with his extended family. He and Marge were enthusiastic travelers in their RV, visiting many locations and friends throughout their journeys.
Family and friends may visit at Resurrection Catholic Parish, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, on Saturday, May 4, from 9:00am until 10:15am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am with Fr. Paul Demuth officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, De Pere.
