Melvin was born on March 4, 1934 to Gordon D. and Marie K. (Beck) Walker in Erie. He graduated from Erie Academy High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Edinboro University and his master's degree from Penn State University.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959 in an artillery-based unit stationed in Mainz, Germany.
Melvin was a teacher for West Middlesex High School from 1959 to 1968, Hickory High School from 1968 to 1993, and also worked at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course for 10 years.
On June 27, 1959, he married his wife Joan (Begeny) Walker, who survives at home.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church since 1959, where he served on many committees as president of church council, meals on wheels, and the food pantry. He was a member of the Sharon University Club and served as president;. He also was a member of the Waterford, West Middlesex 610, Sharon 668, and Shenango Valley 810 Masonic lodges and New Castle Consistory.
Melvin initiated the wrestling program for West Middlesex schools in the 1960s and was a wrestling official for Mercer County schools.
He enjoyed hunting and was a part owner of a hunting camp in Sheffield. He enjoyed the outdoors for recreation and beautification. His most cherished moments were spent with his family.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife Joan Walker; daughter, Christine (Chester Jr.) Burger of Hermitage; son, Craig (Trina) Walker of Allison Park; grandchildren, Andrew and Alex Burger, Jordan and Graham Walker; sisters-in-laws, Patricia Higham of Springfield, Mo., Barbara Travis of San Jose, Calif., Helen Davidson of Houston, Texas, and Betty Jane Walker of Lexington, Ky.; and also his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon D. Walker; mother, Marie K. Walker; and brothers Gordon Walker and Dr. John Walker.
Burial: St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Cemetery.
