A former Rexburg Mayor, Madison County Senator and active church worker, died Wednesday evening at his home in Rexburg following a lingering illness.
He was born January 7, 1878 at Newton, Cache County, Utah, a son of William F and Ann Yates Rigby. He came to Rexburg with his family in 1882 when his father was called with Thomas E. Ricks and William Preston to form an LDS settlement in the Upper Snake River Valley. In 1898 he was made clerk of Rexburg First Ward. In the spring of 1900 he was called on an LDS mission to the Netherlands where he served until May of 1903. While on his mission he was appointed by Govenor Hunt to represent the State of Idaho at the International Congress for the Relief of the Blind, Deaf and Dumb at Brussels, Belgium.
In October 1903 he married Emma Jane Holman in the Logan Temple. He was a High Priest in the LDS Church and at one time was in the bishopric of the Rexburg First Ward.
In 1911 he was elected City Councilman from the first district. He was appointed postmaster by Woodrow Wilson in 1914 and served until 1923 when he became mayor of Rexburg. He served in this position until 1927.
He was elected state senator in 1926 and served in the 19th session of the Idaho Legislature. For two terms he was county assessor and in 1935 he was again elected senator, serving three terms.
His wife died January 9, 1951. In 1953 he was called to serve a second mission to the Netherlands.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alex O. Coleman (Emma)of St. Anthony, and six grandchildren, Anna Jane, John, Julia, Rhea, Reta, Emma Lou.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2pm in the Rexburg First Ward LDS chapel with Bishop Frank Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the Rexburg Cemetery under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home.
