William "Bill" Edward Schaefer, 75, of Freeland, MI, passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018, from intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
Bill was born in Bay City, MI, to the late Hugo and Mary Jo Schaefer, on October 20, 1942, attended St. Brigid School and graduated from Midland High School. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a Master's in Business Administration from Michigan State University.
While still working at Dow, Bill enjoyed volunteering at Midland Center for the Arts and worked on new home construction for Saginaw Habitat for Humanity. After retirement, Bill was actively involved for 8 years with Emmaus House of Saginaw where he did handyman repair work on 13 houses and had a pivotal role in rehabbing 14 houses donated by Rodarte Builders giving some of the women of Emmaus House a once in a lifetime opportunity to own their own home. In 2012, Bill was named Saginawian of the Year for his work at Emmaus House and Habitat for Humanity. In recent years Bill did handyman work with the Mustard Seed Shelter in Saginaw.
Bill is survived by his sister, Barbara A. Schaefer (Mayfield Heights, OH); his brothers, Richard S. Schaefer (Kathy) of Lansing, MI, Stephen T. Schaefer (North Olmsted, OH); and nieces, Anne (Alex) Beirlant, Emily Schaefer, Mary (Michael) Giles, and Ellen Schaefer.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, May 31 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Brigid of Kildare Church in Midland. Fr. Andy Booms will be officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 30 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Smith-Miner Funeral Home and on Thursday morning for one hour prior to the funeral service at St. Brigid Church. Burial will be at Old Calvary Cemetery
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Mustard Seed Shelter, 1325 Cherry St., Saginaw, MI 48601. The family of Bill Schaefer wishes to thank Great Lakes Caring for their compassionate hospice care.
