Seaside, California
Deacon Joe Watson was born on July 21, 1944, in Camden, Alabama to the late Riley and Flora Watson. Joe passed away on April 20, 2019 in Seaside, California.
Joe served in the United States Army, completed his time in Vietnam and was honorably discharged. He later joined family members residing in Monterey County, California, where he made his home. Joe worked at Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Salinas, California in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Firestone closed the Salinas, California plant in 1980. When Joe saw old friends and former co-workers from Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, you couldn't wipe the smile off his face. He was just beside himself with gratefulness.
Joe served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ as a deacon at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Seaside, California under Rev. H.H. Lusk, Sr. He also served his community as past president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He served on the board of directors of the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, the UFCW union organizer/supporter, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and several other civic and social organizations in Monterey County, California.
Joe was Alabama born and raised in Camden (Wilcox County) Alabama. There was something different and special about those Alabama folks who were born in olden days, especially those who lived through a lot of the race separation and segregation, low paying jobs and being looked down on as second class citizens. That taught the Alabama folks, who strived to make a better life for themselves, to appreciate what the Lord God and Jesus Christ had done for them. Joe was one of those folks and that prompted him to stand up for what's right with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Joe enjoyed playing golf and meeting up with his golfing buddies at various golf courses on the central coast and in Northern California.
Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Darlene Watson; siblings John Watson, Abraham Watson, Richard Watson, Wilmer Watson, Maggie Beverly and Irma Watson Levister. He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his wife, Annie Watson; two daughters; his grandchildren, great and great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and his remaining siblings.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 390 Elm Avenue, Seaside, California. Interment will be at California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, Seaside, Monterey County, California.
