Countess of Essex. Adele Beach Grant was an American socialite and heiress, a daughter of David Beach Grant of Grant Locomotive and Rebecca Douglas Stewart, a niece of Thomas Alexander Scott, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Adele Grant married George Devereux de Vere Capell, 7th Earl of Essex, on December 14, 1893 at St. Margaret’s, Westminster. A celebrated beauty, Adele was painted by renowned portrait artists including Edward Robert Hughes, Hubert von Herkome, and John Singer Sargent. The portraits currently hang in museums in England and in the United States. Adele was the last Countess to live at Cassiobury, the grand sixteenth century Capell family estate in Watford, Hertfordshire. In 1902, the Earl and Countess of Essex received Winston Churchill and King Edward VII at Cassiobury. The estate was later let to tenants, the family living primarily at their estate home in London. Adele’s husband, the 7th Earl of Essex died in 1916. Six years after his death and facing the practical and financial realities of the twentieth century, Adele and her stepson the 8th Earl of Essex, listed Cassiobury and its contents for sale. In June 1922, a ten day sale was effected with much of the estates’ contents distributed to museums and private collections. A month later, Adele was found dead in her home. An inquest found death by natural causes, citing cardiac issues. Adele’s coffin remained overnight at St. Margaret’s, Westminster before her remains were cremated and placed in the Essex family vault at Watford Church. (Funeral and burial details provided in "The Earls of Essex: A Tale of Noble Misfortune" by Robert Bard.) A buyer was never found for Cassiobury, and the centuries-old Essex family seat was demolished in 1927.
