Viscountess. Edythe was the daughter of David Beach Grant and Rebecca Douglas Stewart. She married first to Arthur Padelford on 27 Mar 1895 in Rome, Italy. Arthur had previously been married to Elizabeth Ordway, who became the American stage actress Bettina Gerard after their divorce. Following Arthur's death, Edythe married Viscount Gaston Charles de Breteuil on 19 Jul 1904 at the Church of St. Pierre Chaillot in Paris, France. Together they were the parents of Charles Suydam Gaston Letonnelier de Breteuil 1905–1960.

Edythe was the sister of Adele Grant Capell, Countess of Essex. Of historic note, in 1912 the Prince of Wales stayed with Edythe's brother-in-law the Marquis Henri de Breteuil for a number of months in order to improve his French and broaden his education. The Prince of Wales was the future King Edward III who later abdicated, becoming the Duke of Windsor.
