Clara Nadean "Dean" (Abernathy) Whitley was born on December 21, 1936 in Burke County, North Carolina, and she was the daughter of Foster Robert Abernathy Sr (1895–1941) and his wife Bertha May (Mace) Abernathy (1899–1982). {It is noted that the Burke County Birth Index has her name as Nadene Abernathy.}

She was married about 1955 to Thomas Gustave Whitley (1935–2008), the son of Thomas Jefferson Whitley (1909–1985) and Mildred Alberta (Meador) Whitley (1915–1994).

Dean enjoyed crafting, working puzzles, fishing, decorating her home and doing upholstery work. She loved going to the mountains and had a home in Pigeon Forge where she and her sisters would meet to visit often. She enjoyed the squirrels, hummingbirds and other wildlife that visited her back yard. However, she most enjoyed her family, and she had a huge one.

Living in Madison, Davidson County, Tennessee, she was 82 years old and a widow when she passed away at home on April 23, 2019.

Dean was preceded in death by her husband, her parents , brothers Foster "Robert" Abernathy, Ray Abernathy and Walter Abernathy, sisters Elease (Abernathy) Powell and Orene Abernathy and by her grandson Thomas Patrick Whitley. Survivors included four sons and three daughters-in-law, two married daughters, three married sisters, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a very special female caregiver.

Graveside Services were held in Whitley Cemetery at Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee.
