b./d. Herzog, Samara, Russia

Two Denning families immigrated to Russia, Ulrich Denning and Martin Denning. Johann Michael is from the Martin family line.

------------------------------------------

In the 1767 Louis, Russia there were two Dennings, Ulrich Denning and wife Maria from Kurtrier, Saarburg and Martin Denning with wife Anna Maria and son Johannes from Lothringen, Bitsch.

By the 1798 census, there are no Denning descendants in Louis. I am not sure these two are brothers and today Martin would be French and Ulrich would be German but I think their origin in the Alsace-Lorraine area is no more than ten miles apart, they may well be brothers or cousins.

The Louis movement table for 1798 says Martin and family moved to Herzog in 1788. There is nothing about the Ulrich Denning family. What's interesting is the Herzog 1798 movement table says in 1786 Anna Denning was captured by the Kyrgyz-Kaisak -- this before the Martin Denning family moved to Herzog. Also in 1796, Michael Denning, moved to Marienthal where he is listed as the adopted of Thomas Trier and wife. It seems weird that Michael would become the adopted son of another couple while his biological parents were still alive in Herzog. So I could see that both Anna and Michael were the descendants of Ulrich Denning and they might have been orphaned at a young age and placed in Herzog prior to the Martin Denning family moving there in 1788.

Martin Denning in Herzog 1798 has a son named Johannes born 1764 married to Eva Becker and they have a 1 yr old son name Johannes who is the one that marries Elizabeth Auer.

Michael Denning, 30 yr old, in 1798 Mariental, Russia is married to Elizabeth Sulzbach, 25, from Obermonjou and they also have a 1 yr old son named Johannes. This Johannes marries second wife Elisabeth Frank around 1827 and they are the parents of an Anton Denning (1842-1915), listed as 14 yr old in the 1857 Marienthal census.

So the 1857 Herzog census for Johannes Denning and Elizabeth Auer does not have an Anton in it but the Marienthal 1857 census does. I think Anton Denning that came to the US was born in Marienthal and not born to Elizabeth Auer and Johannes Denning. He came to America on the SS Leipzig in 1878 where this link (see below) from a 1926 document states:
www.ksgenweb.org/archives/statewide/ethnic/german-russian/jubilee/largest.shtml

"The last large group of immigrants to Ellis County left Herzog, Russia, on August 8, 1878, under the leadership of Joseph Linenberger. It was made up of the following families: John Billinger, Anton Dening, Andrew Goetz, Henry Hansen, Peter Kuhn, Joseph Linenberger, John Pfeifer, Michael Vonfeld, Valentine Weigel and John Windholz, from Herzog, and John Ernst, Laurence Herrmann, Adam Ernst, Joseph Gassmann, Andrew Korbe and Peter Pfannenstiel of Mariental. Of these, the four last named, together with Anton Dening, settled in Munjor, and the others in Herzog."

I think whoever wrote this assumed Anton Denning was from Herzog because the Elizabeth Auer Dennings (MIchael and Alois) who had immigrated in 1876 were from Herzog. But he was probably traveling with the Mariental contingent. He then settled in Munjor, Kansas (not having any ties to the Herzog Dennings) because his sister, Magdalena Denning Rohr, already lived there.

At least I think that's what happened. So he is more distant relative to the Herzog Dennings at best and may not be related at all if Ulrich and Martin are not related.

As an aside to the above I also note that in the 1857 Herzog census, Johannes Denning and Elizabeth Auer had other children besides MIchael (1834) and Aloisius (1842) including a second son named Michael. He is listed in an earlier census and in Die Herzoger as Johann Michael Denning (see his family below).

Johann Michael Denning (1839-1881) married Elizabeth Knoll in about 1858. They had the following children:
1. Alois, born 1860 per Die Herzoger, born 11 Jun 1861 per Herzog 1879-1912 Family List, stayed in Russia.
2. Anna, 1862, fate unknown
3. Mary Elizabeth, 1863, fate unknown
4. Peter Joseph Denning (this one and all other sons below listed in Herzog 1879-1912 family list as having moved to America).
5. Frank M. Denning
6. John Charles Denning
*7. Joseph Michael Denning (1876-1930) (born 1876 married Rose Anna Hoff per Die Herzoger). This is very likely him.
8. Peter Andreas Denning (listed as Andreas in Die Herzoger and Peter in the Herzog 1879-1912 Family List).
