Sterling Cockrill Cagle was born on January 17, 1878 in Beersheba Springs, Tennessee, the son of Conova Thomas Cagle (1854–1911) and Martha E (Tate) Cagle (1856–1897).
He was married on September 24, 1899 in Warren County to Nancy "Nannie" Stokes (1880–1950), the daughter of Noah Stokes (1850–1882) and Mary Elizabeth (Brown) Stokes (1852–1898).
A retired upholsterer for the railroad and living at 903 Central Avenue in Nashville, Sterling was 73 years old and a widower when he died of an intestinal hemorrhage at 1618 11th Avenue South on April 12, 1951. Burial was two days later in Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashville.
