John Williamson Bird was born on 26 December 1882 in Whittier (Qualla), Jackson County, North Carolina, the third child (of ten) and the first son of Charles Asbury Bird (1853-1938) and Sarah Ermina "Sally" Terrell Bird (1861-1943). He was raised in Jackson Co., NC, and relocated to California prior to 1915. He was married to Byrdie Rosa Gilmore (1890-1954) on 30 January 1915 in Santa Ana, California. They had two daughters. They lived in Los Angeles, CA, then in Seaside, Oregon, before relocating to Humboldt County, CA prior to 1930. They remained there most of the rest of their lives. He worked as a lumberyard tallyman, a high school engineer, and for the E.J. Dodge Company. He was widowed in 1954. He died on 9 October 1964 in Fortuna, CA at the age of 81.
