George William Bauernschmidt Jr., 89, a 56-year resident of his family homestead on the Severn River, died June 19 after an extended illness. He grew up as a Navy junior, the son of the late RADM George William and Maude Pearce Bauernschmidt. He was the grandson of the late Marie Oehl Von Hattersheim Bauernschmidt who had been active in Baltimore politics. He attended St. Albans and Severn schools and was in the class of 1946 at the Naval Academy.As World War II ended, he was not spared from the Navy's downsizing one month before graduation. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree from GW University and an MBA from NYU. He obtained a law degree from the University of Maryland and was a member of the Maryland Bar Association. He worked as a trust officer at Union Trust Bank in Baltimore. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Roberson, whom he married in 1957; five children, George W. Bauernschmidt III, Janet Diane Gill, Emilie B. Langfitt, Nancy B. Kasner, and James R. Bauernschmidt; and ten grandchildren. His interment will take place at St. James' Episcopal cemetery in Monkton where he was confirmed.
