Gerald E. Spencer, age 75, of Charleston went to his heavenly home at 9:00 p.m. on April 20, 2019 surrounded by his loving family at his residence.
A celebration of his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at the First Baptist Church, 1804 South 9th Street, Mattoon, Illinois 61938 with Pastor Dennis Strawn officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at the church. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Gerald was born on December 24, 1943 in Mattoon the son of George and Marjorie (Doty) Spencer. He married Linda Eaton on June 6, 1965.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Spencer of Charleston, IL; children, Kimberly (Bill) Uphoff of Mattoon, IL and Travis (Joy) Spencer of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Jake and Maggie Uphoff and Dakota, Riley and Cooper Spencer all of Mattoon, IL.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jim Spencer.
Gerald grew up in Mattoon and lived his life with the upmost work ethic. He graduated from Mattoon High School and became a Certified Journeyman Pipefitter and Welder through the UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 149. His pipefitter and welding skills contributed to the construction of Eastern Illinois University and Millikin facilities, Decatur and Effingham hospitals, Staleys and Kraft manufacturing plants and Clinton Power Station. Gerald worked for over 20 years as a pipefitter and welder for IBEW Local 149, over 20 years for CIPS and Ameren Utilities, and retired as an Underground Gas Storage Field Operator. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1964 until 1970.
Gerald was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mattoon where he served on the Board of Trustees and volunteered on the Community Backpack Food Ministry. He volunteered at the Mattoon Food Pantry and was a 32nd Degree Master Mason at the Mattoon Masonic Lodge.
Gerald will be remembered as a loving husband, dad, grandpa and friend. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with his wife and was very proud of his two children and their involvement within the community. Gerald also enjoyed attending the many activities of his grandchildren. In his spare time, Gerald enjoyed woodworking, lawn care, fishing, reading and crossword puzzles.
