1871 Korean Campaign Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as a Private in the United States Marine Corps on board the "USS Carondelet". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in the various actions of that vessel in Korea in June 1871. His citation reads "Wounded several times, Dougherty invariably returned to duty, presenting an example of constancy and devotion to the flag". His Medal was issued on February 8, 1872. Private Dougherty was one of 15 United States sailors and marines who was awarded the Medal of Honor for this little known American military action.
