Mrs. King passed away Thursday, April 18, 2019.

She was born Rose Marie Stewart in Helena, Alabama on September 1, 1936, and attended grade school in Helena and then Thompson High School where she graduated. She earned her undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Montevallo (B.A., Education).

There she met her future husband, James L. King, and after his service in the U.S. Navy they were married and started a family. She worked as a teacher in Shelby County schools before opening and operating Mountain Dell, a private kindergarten in Pelham.

Mrs. King was a Sunday school teacher for many years at Helena Baptist Church, her church from childhood, and later for many more years as a member of Lakeside Baptist. She had an artist’s eye and teacher’s heart and loved to write, paint, study, read, and teach - and she loved her flower gardens where she spent many spring and summer hours. Mrs. King was dedicated to Christ and devoted to her husband and large family. Nothing brought her more joy than her 11 grandchildren.

Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, James King (1935-2013); her parents, Aucie Ulmont Stewart (1906-1981) and Mary Lee Roy Stewart (1909-1988); three of her brothers, Aucie U. “Billie” (Louise) Stewart, Jr. (1929-1981), Ted Stewart (1934-?), and Frederick Stewart (1938-1939); her in-laws, Grady Hinds King and Alta Johnson King; and her sister-in-law, Daisy Elaine King.

She is survived by children and grandchildren, Stephen (Amy) King and their sons, Matthew (Christina) and Stewart, of Houston, Texas; Michael (Leah) King and their daughters, Caroline and Catherine, of Westfield, New Jersey; Kathy (Paul) Dunbar and their children, Emily (Garrison) of Murray, Kentucky, Erin of Huntsville, Alabama, and Andrew and Joseph of Greenville, South Carolina; Christopher King (Amelie Davis) and their son, Remy, of Oxford, Ohio; and Lara (Dan) Bell and their children, Emma Rose and Connor, of Hoover; and by her younger brother, Wendell (Sue) Stewart, of Talledega, Alabama, and sister-in-law, Elsa, of Manchester, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2019, at Lakeside Baptist Church in Hoover, Alabama, for Mrs. Rose Marie King, age 82, of Pelham, Alabama. The family will receive visitors at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Following the service, burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama.
