CORNELIA F. RODGERS

Cornelia Florence Rodgers, the daughter of William and Trecie (Young) McBride, was born in Kentucky May 16, 1882, and death occurred early Saturday morning, November 28, 1959, and, as she would have wished it, she was at her home near Goreville and surrounded by the members of her family. She was 77 years, 6 months and 12 days of age.

She was one of a family of eight children and the last surviving member of that family.

In 1899 (ED. NOTE: married April 16, 1901) she was united in marriage to George Franklin Rodgers, who preceded her in death in September, 1957. To this marriage were born six children, Vern Rodgers (Jo) of Johnston City RFD 1; Mrs. Trecie Cox (Joe) of Marion RFD 5; Mrs. Cecil Dennison (Curt) and Thomas Rodgers (Dimple), both of Kankakee, Mrs. Mable Grant (Arlie) of Buncombe and Mildred Rodgers at home.

In addition to these loved ones, there are six grandchildren, Roger Allen, Ronald and Larry Dennison, Leon Rodgers and Betty Nell and Lois Ann Grant; two great great grandchildren, Mary Beth and Brad Dale Dennison; a number of nieces and nephews and other near relatives.

Dear to the heart of Mrs. Rodgers were her grandchildren. Dear also to her heart were her next door neighbor boys, William Ray and Carl Kelley. Through their youthful years and on into manhood, because of the great respect they have had for her, and the love they have extended to her, happy was she to share the love a grandmother with them and happy were they to call her grandmother.

The greater part of her life has been lived in this community. In 1917, she and Mr. Rodgers moved to the present home. After his passing, she and Mildred still maintained it. As you passed their home you were assured of a friendly greeting or a wave of the hand. She possessed a pleasing personality and was one with whom you loved to speak.

Thinking of the many kind deeds extended to all, the lines of the poet seem most fitting, "Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."

She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a neighbor who gave willingly of her time and service to any and all who needed her. She accepted Christ as her savior several years ago. Her health had been frail for many months, but since September had grown gradually frailer.

She loved her home, but because of her health and upon the insistence of her children she reluctantly left it last winter to with them in Kankakee. She was happy when the time came for her return. Here were her home, her neighbors and friends. In every instance, all that her good children could do was done to make life comfortable and more pleasant for her.

As she closed her eyes in this last long sleep, the busy world was hushed, the fever of her life was over and her work completed. We have faith to believe it was then her heavenly Father granted her a safe lodging, a holy rest and peace.
