William Morris Wilcox
The funeral of William Wilcox was held Sunday afternoon at the Bethel church, Rev. C.W. Odom of the Burlington M.E. church preaching the sermon.
William Morris Wilcox was born near Clockville, New York, on March 7, 1836. At the age of 18 he came west locating near Plainfield, Ill. It was here that he was married to Rachel M. Rutan, on October 9, 1862, and here their two children were born, Orpha and Charles. The new and growing west offering and adventurous futures for the young folks of this time, and early in 1869 this young couple came to Kansas, with willing hands and a determination to win. On a borrowed horse, after landing near Burlington, Mr. Wilson started out in search of a homestead. Crossing Otter creek, he headed northwest until he came to a deep, loam soil that reminded him of the corn producing prairies of Illinois. Here he decided to stay and the land he secured by homestead remained his through the following years of his life. Lumber for a new home was hauled from Ottawa 60 miles away. Times were trying but through all these plucky pioneers stayed, often eating cornbread, not by order of a food administration, but by order of necessity. The homestead, with many added acres, remained the home of this couple until April 16, 1915, when the wife was called to the Home Eternal. Since then Mr. Wilcox has made his home almost continuously with his daughter, Mrs. Orpha Haehn. He was a member of a class of the Baptist church that once existed in the Otter Creek neighborhood, and has always been held in the highest esteem by a large acquaintance. Until feeling that the should retire because of age, he was for a number of years President of the Hartford National bank. Besides his daughter and son, he leaves to mourn his departure 12 grandchildren. He died May 10, 1918, aged 82 years, 2 months and 3 days.
