When Donald Rufus Smith was born on August 11, 1940, in Dunlap, Tennessee, his father, Curtis, was 21 and his mother, Johnnie, was 20. He married Myrtle Alice Minton about 1958 in Georgia, and they raised three children together. He died on July 4, 2014, in Capac, Michigan, at the age of 73.
