US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was attending the University Greencastle, when he enlisted as a Private in Company K of the 71st Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Union Army and served until the end of the war. Returning home, he studied law, graduated from the Indianapolis Law College in 1867, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice in Newport, Indiana. He continued in practice law until 1873, when he entered into the newspaper business. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. After his term, he resumed his newspaper interest and was editor of the American Standard from 1896, until his death at age 61.
