John R. Peek, 71, of East Shore Road, Glenfield, died on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 in Cape Coral, FL, after fighting an eight year battle with merkel cell cancer.

There will be no calling hours or funeral. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

John was born on December 31, 1944 in Rome, NY, a son of the late, Willard and Tecla Taraps Peek. He graduated from Holland Patent Central School in 1962 and SUNY Cortland in 1967. He taught physical education at Waterloo Elementary School and on August 17, 1968, he married Janette M. Hayes at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Holland Patent. He began teaching at South Lewis Central School in 1971 and taught there until his retirement in 1998. He coached lacrosse, basketball and golf. He enjoyed fishing and kayaking.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janette; a son and daughter-in-law, Casey and Sherri Peek of Dayville, CT; a brother-and sister-in-law, Thomas and Penny Peek of Floyd, NY; a sister, Patricia Westcott of Floyd, NY; his mother-in-law, Vivian Loson Hayes of Lowville; an aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by three brothers, William and George Peek; and Stanley Peek, who died in infancy; a brother-in-law, Theal Westcott.

John’s family would like to thank his former students, and especially Alia Brown Gervasi and friends who sent well wishes and supported us through this battle.
