Lorraine Margaret Farrell Hansen passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 7, 2019. Lorraine was born in Chicago, IL, on May 27, 1926 and grew up in Ashland, WI. She was the daughter of Sidney Michael Farrell and Mary Madeline (Bonney). Lorraine married Robert H. Hansen in Grand Haven, MI on July 2nd 1949. The couple celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family members in July 1991 with a special trip to Mackinac Island.
Lorraine joined the Cadet Nurse Corp during World War II in May 1944. After a three-year training program, she graduated with a Registered Nurse degree from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Fort Wayne, IN in May 1947. Had the War not ended she would have served in the military.
She practiced her profession for 47 years in the areas of Obstetrics, Surgery, Emergency Room, Medical nursing, Neonatal and Pediatrics at Grand Haven and Traverse City Munson hospitals. Lorraine also served as Director of Nurses for twenty years at Reed City Hospital. She retired from nursing in November 1995, and was an active volunteer at Munson Medical Center in the Hospital Gift Shop until 2013, and was a volunteer with the Grand Traverse Regional Health Care Coalition. She also volunteered in many activities at the First Congregational Church of Traverse City, where she was a member. Lorraine was an avid reader, loved knitting special items for others, and enjoyed a fair amount of traveling in the U.S. and abroad. She cherished any and all family gatherings and many special friendships. Lorraine was a true believer in taking care of one’s physical and mental health with appropriate exercise on a regular basis, along with a special emphasis on taking care of one’s spiritual life.
Lorraine is survived by four children, Lori Lynn Hansen (Don) Riegle of Glen Arbor, MI, John Farrell (Lanise) Hansen of Lexington, OH, Kurt Robert Hansen of Grandville, MI, and Jodi Ann Hansen (Karen) of Toledo, OH; four grandchildren, Ashley and Allison Riegle, and Tyler and Tiffany Hansen; two step grandchildren, Matt Rodriguez and Emily Love; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her parents, a brother Donald Michael Farrell and sister Dorothy Ann Branzell.
A Memorial Service for Lorraine will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in First Congregational Church in Traverse City with internment to take place in the church’s Garden of Remembrance.
