Jerry died Wednesday, April 17, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Jerry E. Jensen, son of LeRoy C. and Hertha (Klein) Jensen was born on June 8, 1948, at Aberdeen, SD. He was raised in the Aberdeen area and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School with the class of 1966. Jerry went on to attend Northern State University for one semester prior to enlisting in the United States Army on January 10, 1969. He spent 14 months in Vietnam as an Infantryman, receiving his honorable discharge on August 12, 1970. Jerry was a decorated veteran receiving many badges and medals during his time of service including a Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Air Medals, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four battle stars and a Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Following his honorable discharge, Jerry went on to attend Black Hills State College for two semesters before enrolling at Northwestern Vocational Technical School in Sturgis, SD, where he studied carpentry and drafting. Jerry worked road construction for 20 years for Larson Teigen Construction and worked numerous carpentry jobs in the Rapid City and Aberdeen areas for 20 years before his retirement.

In his free time, Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also liked collecting coins and beer mugs. Jerry was an avid baseball and football fan and cheered passionately for the Cincinnati Reds and the Green Bay Packers. Jerry insists that, “The Lombardi Trophy belongs in Lambeau Field, the rest of the teams just borrow it!” Jerry is a life member of the Rapid City VFW Post #1273 as well as a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3 in Rapid City.

Grateful for having shared Jerry’s life are his sister: Gloria (Duane) Sukut, Bowdle, SD; one nephew: Sol (Heather) Sukut, and their children: Darby, Delana, Joshua, Jacob and Andrew; his niece: Sandra (Peter) Frickson, and their children: Samantha, Tanner and Brittney; two uncles: Gideon Klein and Harold (Karen) Klein; and his aunt-in-law: Abbie Jensen.

Preceding Jerry in death are his parents: LeRoy and Hertha; numerous aunts and uncles, and his dog, Willie.
