Wayne L. Powell, 81, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at Golden Years Homestead, Fort Wayne, IN.

Wayne was born on November 27, 1937, in Huntington, IN, to James and Winnie (Pyles) Powell. His parents preceded him in death. Wayne married Shirley (Rennie) Bullock on June 14, 1978. She survives and resides in Huntington.

Wayne graduated from Huntington High School in 1955. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed on the Destroyer USS Caperton and at the Pentagon. Wayne was a postman for the United States Post Office in Huntington and then was on the Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief from 1980-1984. He was a member of the City Council from 2004-2008, and a member of the VFW #2689, finance officer for American Legion Post 7, and a member and past Commander of AMVETS. Wayne was well known for skydiving out of planes and landed frequently at the start of the Huntington Fireworks ceremony.

Along with his wife, Shirley, Wayne is survived by two sons, Scott Powell, Daytona, FL, Rodney (Judy) Powell, Fort Wayne, IN; three daughters, Tammy (Tim) Dalton, Jodi (Sam) PeGan, both of Huntington, IN, Shawn Zimmerman, MD; one step-son, Colin (Machelle) Bullock; one step-daughter, Carolyn (Dick) Truitt, both of Huntington, IN. Wayne is also survived by one brother, Keith (Gail) Powell, Mesa, AZ; one sister, Janice Unger, Bourbonnais, IL; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by one step-son, John Bullock.

To honor the wishes of Wayne there will be no calling hours.

A Military Graveside Burial will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Marion National Cemetery, Marion, IN.
