He served his country as a member of the First Marine Division in World War II, seeing action in the battle for Okinawa and in North China fighting the communist rebellion. Following the war, Mr. Wood received his Bachelor of Arts degree from City College of Chicago and MBA from Northwestern University. Notably, Mr. Wood co-founded Safety-Kleen Corporation in 1968 and served as senior vice president and board member until 1985 when he retired, continuing on the board until the company's sale in 1997. Safety-Kleen went public in 1978 and in 1988 it became the first company in the history of the New York Stock Exchange to achieve at least 20% or better growth for 18 straight years. Mr. Wood held many community volunteer positions including president of the Northwest Suburban Community Chest prior to its merger with the United Way. Mr. Wood spent his retirement years in pursuit of his passion for fishing at his homes in Naples, Florida and Green Lake, Wisconsin.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen; he will be deeply missed by his devoted children Marshall, Debbie, Sunny and Ian; and loving grandchildren Sean, Alison, Carolyn and Haley.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Leppert, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis.
