Twins, William Henry and John Robert, were born on January 15, 1881 to Elizabeth Birmingham on the family farm in Wellesley Township. "Johannes Robertus Birmingham" was baptized two days later and the church records say the twins were illegitimate. Elizabeth, the mother, and William, the twin, both died in childbirth.

The 1881 Canada census shows John at three months of age living with his grandparents, William and Caroline Birmingham. In 1891 he is living with the family of his biological father who had married Catherine Birmingham, a younger sister of his mother and he has adopted the last name of "Uttley". In 1901 at age 20 John with the surname "Birmingham" is working at the Woolen Mill in Waterloo and boarding on his own.

John married Viola Ellsworth in 1910 at Niagara Falls and the 1911 census shows the couple living in Niagara Falls with the family of his wife's parents. The couple is still in Niagara Falls a decade later for the 1921 census and no children are listed. John was employed as a locomotive firemen and an engineer on the railroad.

His wife died in March 1939 and was buried beside her mother at Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls. John Robert Birmingham died in September, the same year, of a coronary embolism. He was buried beside his wife at Fairview Cemetery with no tombstone.
