Another Niagra County Pioneer Has Passed Away
Daniel Pletcher of Pletcher's Corners, near this village, died Feb 27. He was the son of Wm Pletcher, of Center Co., Pa., where he was born Aug. 4, 1810. In the year 1812 the family removed to Geneseo NY, and in 1814 removed to Niagra county and settled on the farm known as Pletcher's Corners. Here was wrought out a home from the primeval forest. Daniel succeeded to that portion of the farm lying on the north-east corner, where he resided up to the time of his death. Daniel Pletcher was possessed of much vigor for a man of his age and bid fair to live many years; but last fall while on a visit to Michigan undue exposure prostrated him for a week or more; he then rallied and was enabled to reach home, but did not fully recover and sinking gradually in the 75th year of his age. Nov. 3, 1836, Daniel Pletcher married Miss Eliza Chapman, (daughter of Stephen Chapman, an early and prominent pioneer of this county) who died June 10, 1845. The surviving children of this union are Hiram Pletcher of this village, Mrs. Eliza Ingersoll of Galena, Ill., and Mrs. Sarah J. Pletcher of Lowell, Mich. Oct 1, 1846, he married Miss Lovina Chapman, sister of Eliza, who died Nov 24, 1861. The surviving children of this union are Franklin Pletcher and Albert Pletcher of this place. Jan 13, 1865, he married Margaret Breth, of Center Co., Pa who died March 30, 1884. The surviving brothers and sisters of Dnaiel Pletcher are Mrs. David Pletcher, Mrs. Martin Wagner, Mrs Esther Doty and Jacob Pletcher, of Lewsiton; John Pletcher, of Perkin; Mrs. Jacob Reese of this place; Mrs. Nancy Shuman and Mrs. Catharine Passage of Mich. It was the writer's privilege to live with the family of Daniel Pletcher for a long time and became intimately acquainted with all the members of the family; and we cheerfully and truthfully state that during our entire sojourn there nothing occurred to merit censure. Mr Pletcher was a model of well directed industry, thoroughness and neatness; all his surroundings were tidy, presenting no dilapidation or carelessness. In his family he was ever the kind and considerate husband and father, neglecting nothing that might conduce to their comfort and happiness. He was always kind and genial and scrupulous- upright in all his business and social relations. We desire further to state that Mrs. Lovina Pletcher, on whom devolved the burden of rearing her sister's children as well as her own, was a lady of rare Christian character and culture. She was indeed an ornament to her family and we find reproduced in the children a character that reflects honor on the precepts and example of an earnest and devoted Christian mother. The Rev. Mr Rockwell, of Niagra Falls, preached the sermon and his eloquent description of the achievements wrought out during the life of our patron and friend will long be remembered. When we think of all Mr. Pletcher was to his family and friends we can but be thankful that he has lived thus long. We remember his toils and care for his family and we know that they cherish the memory of the log cabin made by his hands and where their childhood was spent and appreciate fully the substantial brick structure which they now call their home.
