Conventual Franciscan priest
With thankfulness to our almighty and loving God for the wonderful gift of Fr. Charles Kozanecki to the Church, to the Order of Friars Minor Conventual and to Saint Paul the Apostle Parish, the Franciscan Friars announce to one and all that God sent Sister Death to take this precious gift to Himself in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 15, 2007.
Fr. Charles Kozanecki was born on February 4, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He entered the Franciscan Order in Lake Forest, Illinois on August 2, 1946, and made his solemn vows for life on August 12, 1950. His studies began at Our Lady of Consolation Seminary in Carey, Ohio and continued with his theological studies at Saint Anthony-on-Hudson in Rensselaer, New York. He graduated with a Masters in Education from Loyola University in Chicago. Father Charles was ordained a priest on May 30, 1953 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany, New York.
He began his priestly ministry as the associate pastor at Saint Hedwig Parish in Detroit, Michigan. His parish ministry continued at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Hermosa Beach, California and Saint Bronislava Parish in Chicago, Illinois. A teaching position brought Father Charles to Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California. Father Charles returned to Chicago as chaplain at Loyola University and then served at Saint Josephat Basilica in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1975 he returned to California to minister at Saint Thomas the Apostle and Queen of Angels Parishes in Riverside. In 1977 he moved to the Central Coast to serve as chaplain at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo. From 1987 to 1991 Father Charles served as the novice master at the friary in Arroyo Grande, leading young friars through their years of preparation to make their first vows. In 1991 he became the pastor at Saint Paul the Apostle in Pismo Beach and served in that position for ten years. After his "retirement" in 2001, Father Charles continued to minister to his flock on the Central Coast. He was always active in offering mass, comforting the sick, preaching the Gospel, baptizing, solemnizing marriages and burying the dead. Many will remember him as the friend who helped them and their families in their need and who jokingly and jovially interacted with them.
During his fifty-four years of priesthood, his light-hearted ways and affection for the people always came through in whatever he was asked to undertake. Father Charles was a very spiritual and dedicated Franciscan priest and considered by the friars to be a special asset to the Order of Friars Minor Conventual and, in particular, to the California province of Saint Joseph of Cupertino.
