Sister Death called our Brother Francis home on Friday morning, January 19, 1990. He died peacefully while asleep as the novice friars kept vigil. He suffered patiently for two years being diagnosed with cancer. Bro. Francis Anthony (Allen Victor) was born in Chicago on January 10, 1924. After completing school he served in the U.S. navy during the early days of World War II. Following service, he worked in the shipyards in Chicago for a number of years. In 1954 he entered the community at Marytown in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was received as a novice into the Order on October 4, 1955 and made his First Profession of Vows on November 21, 1956. Solemn Profession followed on December 8, 1959. Francis spent his early years at Marytown, working with the brothers in the office and laundry, and later cooking at the House of Studies in Chicago on Sheridan Road. In 1962 he was called to be of service at the General Curia in Rome, working there until 1965. Returning to the States, Bro. Francis received brief assignments to the novitiate in Lake Forest, Illinois and again at the House of Studies in Chicago. In 1966 he was assigned to his favorite State, California, where he served at the Torrance Friary for nine years. After another brief stint in Chicago, Bro. Francis joined Fr. Aloysius at the Franciscan Center in Newberry Springs, CA, until the foundation of the California Custody. Both in the Custody and the newly formed Province, he has been an example of quiet dedicated service, deeply devoted to Our Lady. He was worked diligently at Padua House, El Segundo, St. Francis Friary in Oakland…and since 1981 at the Novitiate and Provincial Center in Arroyo Grande. When not busily preparing the next meal, Francis could be found in quiet prayer in the chapel, relaxing with the friars or composing and practicing the piano. He was deeply committed to the community. The Vigil (Wake) service was celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Pismo Beach, Ca. on Sunday evening, January 21st. Frs. Ronald and Peter presided. Over forty friars participated in the Liturgy of Resurrection the following day, with some thirty concelebrating. Burial followed in the Province Cemetery in Arroyo Grande. The Assistant General and Minister Provincials and Custodes of North America and England participated. It was a fitting farewell for a humble and gentle friar. May he rest in peace!
