Actress. Born Berit Elisabeth Andersson in Stockholm, Sweden, she is best known for appearing in Ingmar Bergman films. She starred in ten motion pictures and three television films he directed. She starred with James Garner and Sidney Poitier in the western film Duel at Diablo in 1966 and with Steve McQueen in the Arthur Miller film adaptation of An Enemy of the People in 1977. From 1951 to 2007 she appeared in 61 films. She was awarded the Best Actress prize from the 1958 Cannes Film Festival , the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival in 1963, Best Actress at the 4th Guldbagge Awards in 1967, and the Ibsen Centennial Commemoration Award in 2006. In her final years, she worked primarily in theater and on television.
