Allan Jenkins Petersdorf
Resident of Danville, CA
Our beloved Allan Jenkins Petersdorf (Sweetheart, Dad, Pete, Papa, PopPete) passed away peacefully on May 24, 2018 in his hometown of Danville at 93. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final days. Allan is survived by his wife Kathe, son Allan Petersdorf Jr. (Susan) and daughter Gay Spivey (Rich), six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and nephew Wally Dunsmoor (Sheila). He is preceded in death by his daughter Sherry Moniz, his parents Walter and Ona June Petersdorf and his ex wife Louise. Allan is also survived by his three stepsons Tony Beach (Terri), John Beach (Katina), Curtis Beach Sabine), and eight more grandchildren - a happy and successfully blended family.
Allan was born in Astoria, Oregon on June 4, 1924, and grew up in logging camps in the Cascade mountains out of the mill town of Wendling. He graduated from Mohawk High School and at age 17 joined the First Marine Division to fight in Guadalcanal and the South Pacific during World War II. Taking advantage of the GI Bill he attended Western Oregon College of Education and completed his Masters at USC. His career in education started in Roseburg, Oregon teaching and coaching and was promoted to Principal of Green Elementary School there. Allan moved to California in 1956 and held positions as teacher, assistant principal and principal in San Carlos, CA. Allan accepted the position of assistant superintendent in the Castro Valley School District from 1957-65. He moved to the Hayward Unified School District in 1965 where he held positions of director of elementary education and assistant superintendent educational services.
Allan accepted his first position as superintendent of schools in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District in 1970. He remained there until 1973 when he accepted the position of superintendent of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. During his tenure as superintendent, student achievement was ranked in the upper 10% of all school districts in the State of California. Allan retired in 1986 but remained active in education by becoming the Executive Director of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) until his second retirement in 1994.
Allan had been an outstanding athlete during his school years and continued his love of sports to the very end while watching the GS Warriors, Giants and 49ers! He loved nothing more than playing a round of golf on a beautiful afternoon with good friends!
A celebration of Allan's life is planned on June 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Blackhawk Museum, 3700 Blackhawk Plaza Circle, Danville CA 94506. A reception will begin immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers an Allan Petersdorf Memorial Scholarship has been established C/O Assistance League of Diablo Valley, 2711 Buena Vista Ave., Walnut Creek, 94597.
