ROCHESTER -- Roger C. Aakre, age 69, died on Friday, June 8, 2007, of cancer following a brief illness.
Roger was born July 6, 1937 in Rock Dell Township, Olmsted County, Minn. He graduated from Hayfield High School and served in the US Navy from 1955 until 1958. On Oct. 5, 1963 he married Beth Wortman at George, Iowa. He worked for IBM from 1960 until retiring as a Product Analyst on June 30, 1993.
Roger was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, The Quarter Century Club at IBM, The Sons of Norway, and the Rochester American Legion Post 92. He enjoyed woodworking, watching his grandchildren in sporting events, fishing, hunting, traveling the last 10 years, going to his cabin near Brainerd, Minn. and taking long walks with his wife Beth. He also ran in the Twin Cities Marathon and many 10 K races. His wife was a RN at Methodist Hospital before her retirement.
Roger is survived by his wife, Beth; daughters: Sandra Borgschatz (Gary) of Pine Island, Minn.; Melinda Aakre of Rochester, Minn.; Colette Schwartzman (Robert) of Albuquerque, N.M.; son, Scott Aakre (Marcy) of Rochester; grandchildren: Tanner Borgschatz, Garrett, Sam and Madelyn Aakre, Maquel, Caleb, twins, Jordyn and Danae, and Daniel and Matthew Schwartzman; his twin brother, Robert (Nadine) Aakre of Rochester; brothers: Harlan (Shirley) Aakre of Rochester; Virgil (Marie) Aakre of Brainerd; Davis (Shirley) Aakre of Rochester; sisters, Virginia Aakre of Rochester and Jean Thoe (David) of Hayfield, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at Bethel Lutheran Church, with Rev. Linda Helberg officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home and then at the church one hour prior to service on Wednesday. Memorials are requested to Bethel Lutheran Church Organ Fund, or Seasons Hospice.
