Darel “Wayne” Heppner was born in Norfolk, Nebraska on December 16, 1948, to Darel Max and Marilyn Jean (Acker) Heppner.

Except for two years, Wayne lived his first 31 years in Norfolk. He graduated from Norfolk High School in 1967.

On June 23, 1968, Wayne married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Cora Jane Cole. She graduated as his wife while he was in the Army. Wayne served from 1969 to 1970, stationed in Korea in the field artillery fire directional center and was honorably discharged at the rank of Specialist 5th Class.

Wayne worked twelve years for his dad in the plumbing business and worked 36 years as a freezer supervisor at a Norfolk processing plant before retiring in 2015.

He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Winter Munson Post 1644 and American Legion Post 16.

Wayne and Cora were blessed with two great kids, Tammy and Bob. In 1979, they moved to Battle Creek. They had six fabulous grandchildren that made life worth living.

In 2004, they bought a farm just north of Battle Creek.

His wife Cora passed away in 2014.

His interests were hunting and fishing, which his dad instilled in him. He would have rather been outside with nature than most anywhere else. Wayne was always studying the habits and characteristics of animals and birds. He tried to pass on this tradition to his children and grandchildren. Wayne played softball in various Norfolk leagues for many years. He also enjoyed traveling the states by car, collecting John Wayne memorabilia, and traditional country music.

Wayne passed away leaving a daughter, Tammy and her husband Brad Schaecher of Battle Creek; son, Bob and his wife Kari of Battle Creek; two brothers, Virgil and wife Vaneta of Gretna and Gary and wife Denise of Norfolk; and grandchildren, Jordan (fiancé LaDora) Schaecher of Humphrey, Aaron Schaecher of Battle Creek, Shawna (Jared) Pritchard of O’Neill, and Tessa Schaecher of Battle Creek and Dalaney Heppner of Battle Creek and step-grandson, Kadin Hickman of Battle Creek.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and wife.
