She was born to the late Sidney and Henrietta Witzer on June 17, 1947. Janice attended the University of Kentucky, where she met the love her life, her "chief" Larry. She spent 32 years at the Cabinet for Families and children. She then worked as an independent contractor of First Steps for about 10 years, which was a highlight of her career. She was an active member in the community and was past presidents of Altrusa International of Lexington, Hadassah and Sisterhood at Temple Adath Israel. She also started Big Sisters of Lexington and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Matt Bevin. She had the time of her life making others smile. Janice is survived by her adoring husband Larry, children Angie Smith (Jonathan), Kelli Newman and Jeff Newman (Andrea), three Grandchildren Marjorie, Taylor and Hunter, Sister Judy (Bill) and brothers Steve (Linda) and Mark (Estella). She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last few months. The funeral will take place Monday, September 18th at Temple Adath Israel 124 N. Ashland Avenue, Lexington at 12:15 pm with Rabbi Wirtschafter officiating. Graveside service at Lexington Cemetery will follow at 1:45. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to "Altrusa Foundation" with a reference to the Janice Newman Scholarship Fund that will benefit University of Kentucky students pursuing degrees in family studies and Social Work.
