Phil A. Blackford

Phil A. Blackford, 92, who was in the banking business at Hillsboro for 46 years, died at 1:15 a.m. Saturday, April 22 at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa. He had suffered a stroke one week before.

Since his retirement as president of the Hillsboro Savings Bank in 1952 he and Mrs. Blackford had lived in Ottumwa.

Mr. Blackford was born Dec. 7, 1879, on a farm near Hillsboro and was one of 12 children of John W. and Nancy Altland Blackford. He was married Oct. 4, 1906, to Josephine M. Cook, who survives. Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, John C. Blackford, who is president of the Union Bank and Trust Co., of Ottumwa; two granddaughters and three grandsons.

The funeral service was held at the Reece Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Monday, April 24. The Rev. Stan Woeste of First United Methodist Church was in charge. Burial was in Vale Cemetery, five miles southwest of Hillsboro.

The family has established a memorial fund payable to the First United Methodist Church of Ottumwa.
