At an early age, Vassar accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Pine Hill Baptist Church where she remained an active and dedicated member until her health began to fail. She served as a Sunday School teacher and was the musician for the choir for over fifty years. Vassar was instrumental in planning and implementing the annual church Homecoming/Revival services. She also chaired several special committees.
Vassar graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1952 with honors. She accepted a position as dietitian at Richmond Memorial Hospital and retired after thirty-two years of service. Vassar took formal piano lessons for only four months in high school. She then purchased a home-study piano course and taught herself to play the piano which enabled her to become an accomplished pianist.
