Arthur L. Conaty, 93, of 15 Quincy St., previously of North Providence, an officer of the U.S. District Court during the Truman administration, died yesterday at St. Joseph Hospital, North Providence.
He was the husband of Katherine S. (Dunn) Conaty.
Mr. Conaty was active in Democratic politics, serving as an alderman in Providence in the early 1920s. He unsuccessfully sought the party nomination for Congress from the First District in 1926 and 1930.
He was first sworn in as Probate Court judge in North Providence in 1937, and served in the post until 1943. In 1947, he was named to a four-year term as U.S. Commissioner for the federal District Court in Rhode Island.
Mr. Conaty attended Boston University and was awarded a law degree, and a degree in pattern law in 1919 from Georgetown University. He maintained a private law practice in Providence until he was well in his 80s. He was a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association and the Holy Name Society of St. Augustine's Church.
He grew up in Providence, lived on Belvedere Boulevard, North Providence, for 52 years until moving back Providence three years ago.
He was a son of the late John M. and Katherine (McCrudden) Conaty.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, three daughters, a sister, 16 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
