At 2:00 o'clock yesterday morning John P. Harris, one of the oldest settlers of Jefferson county, passed away after a month's illness from a complication of diseases incident to his extreme old age. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the Baptist church conducted by the minister, Rev. E. B. Taft.
John P. Harris was born in Indiana on March 27, 1833, on April 4, 1861 at Prairie Creek, Ind., he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Thompson. On the 4th of last April Mr. and Mrs. Harris celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. Mr. Harris moved to Nebraska in the spring of 1869 and took a homestead on what is now known as Dry Branch in Jefferson county here he farmed for a number of years later moving into town. He was an old soldier having enlisted in Co. F. 85th Indiana where he served two years and eleven months He was a member of the G. A. R., which organization will have charge of the funeral services tomorrow. He leaves a wife, three daughters and four sons. The children are Mrs. Henry Hill of Creston, Wash., Mrs. Emery Lucas of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Chas. Hoppe of Fairbury, Herbert and Tory Harris of Spokane, Wash., and Wm. and John Harris of Fairbury.
