Dorothy Snowden 'Happy' Jones died on November 9, 2017 at her home in Memphis, TN. She was born on February 22, 1937 in Memphis, TN to Robert B. and Grace M. Snowden of Horseshoe Lake, AR.

Happy was a graduate of Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT and attended Southwestern University before marrying her first husband, Frank A. Jones. Frank and Happy had three daughters, whom she often said were her proudest accomplishments.

During the 1960's Happy became involved with local politics and founded the Shelby County chapter of the Young Republicans. After the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., she began her lifelong dedication to civil rights. She became a founding member of the local chapter of the Panel of American Women, which raised awareness of prejudice, racism and discrimination. She chaired the Concerned Women of Memphis and Shelby County, who championed better living conditions for sanitation workers and their families and helped avert a second strike in 1969.

Her community work included teaching parenting classes in disenfranchised neighborhoods and spearheading the drive for the magnet school program for Memphis City Schools. In her professional life, Happy was a marriage and family therapist with the Center for Personal Growth.

Happy gave her time, talent and financial assistance to many worthwhile charities and especially liked supporting young women and female political candidates. She was a fierce advocate for social justice and was well-known in local circles for her political recommendations before every election.

Happy married her late husband Fred Terry in 1980. They taught together at the Christian Brothers University summer minority engineering program, volunteered at the Grace St.-Luke's Food Pantry and Idlewild Presbyterian's More Than A Meal program, and were members of The Rivendell Community. Their 37 years together were filled with love, laughter, and sailing in the British Virgin Islands. Happy's 'joie de vivre' seemed to end when Fred died unexpectedly in September of this year.

Happy is survived by her three daughters, Whitney DeVine (Craig) of Bellevue, WA, Dottie Jones (Angie Dagastino) of Memphis, and Meade Hanna (Mike) of Arlington, VA, two step-children, Mike Terry (Melissa) and Laura Ann Terry (Jim), seven grandchildren and innumerable friends.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22 at Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
