MRS. HENRIETTA MACK DEAD

Passed Away at Age of 67 Years After Three Weeks Illness With Typhoid Fever.

Mrs. Henrietta L. Mack, who has made her home in this city the past six years with her son, Hugh B. Mack, died yesterday afternoon after suffering three weeks with typhoid fever. She attained the ripe old age of 67 years.


Mrs. Mack was born in Staben [sic: Steuben] county, New York, January 28, 1838. She later moved to Wisconsin and Illinois where she lived until six years ago, when she came to Galena. Her illness was but three weeks struggle with typhoid fever and a complication of other diseases. The children had hoped for many years of her comfort. A large number of friends here and in her old home mourn her departure from this world.


Three sons survive her, Hugh B. Mack and Frank B. Reynolds, of this city, and James R. Mack, of Libertyville, Ill. The funeral was held this afternoon from the residence on East Sixth street and interment was made in the Galena cemetery.

WELL KNOWN LADY DEAD

Henrietta Mack Passed Away Tuesday Afternoon.

About four o'clock Tuesday afternoon Mrs. Henrietta Mack passed away after an illness of a few weeks, at her home in East Galena. Mrs. Mack had been ill with typhoid fever, but was not considered dangerously sick, until yesterday, when she became suddenly worse and died very quickly.


Mrs. Mack was universally known in Galena and has a long list of friends, who will regret her death. She was 65 years of age and is survived by two sons, Hugh Mack and Frank Reynolds, both of whom are well known Galena citizens.


The funeral occurred at 4:30 p. m. Wednesday, and interment was made in the Galena cemetery.

James R. Mack is in the city from Libertyville, Mo. [sic: Ill.], visiting his brother, Hugh B. Mack. Mr. Mack did not receive the dispatch informing him of the death of his mother until too late to arrive for the funeral. The dispatch was sent to another state to a city having a similar name.

64th Birthday Party for Henrietta

Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Mack entertained about twenty friends last evening in honor of the 64th birthday of Mr. Mack's mother, Mrs. J. R. Mack. The evening was most pleasantly spent with games and conversation. Refreshments extraordinary, were served. It was a

very enjoyable evening for all present.

Biographical Notes:

Henrietta's known sons were Hugh B Mack, Frank B Reynolds, and James Rexford Mack. Her daughter was Rio J (Mack) Whiteside. The 1900 census reports that Henrietta had four children, all four living. As to her maiden name, her son James Rexford Mack's death information reported Goff as her maiden name and there were Henrietta Goffs, born in New York, in McHenry County in the 1850 and 1860 census records.

Her son, Hugh B Mack, was a jeweler in Galena, and in other places. He married Mary Francis "Fannie" (Hayton), in 1904 in Galena, but the marriage did not last. At the time of her death, Fannie was Mary Francis Hayton Dunham. Hugh died in Leavenworth, Kansas, on July 26, 1933. It is not known where he is buried.

Rio married David B Whiteside in Alexandria, Douglas County, Minnesota on November 23, 1898. The wedding was announced in the Galena newspapers. An infant daughter was born to the couple December 2, 1899, in Galena, but died December 8th.

Rio only lived 2 more years, dying in September of 1900, in Alexandria.

One of Henrietta's husbands was James R Mack, whom she married (her last name was Reynolds at the time of that marriage) May 5, 1863, in McHenry County, Illinois, according to Illinois marriage records. A biographical notation for him has this information: "Biographical Directory of the Tax-Payers and Voters of McHenry County, p. 297


MACK, J. R., Farmer, w. Sec. 17; Nunda P.O.; born in Harpersfield, Delaware Co., N.Y., March 29, 1817; came to McHenry Co. in 1845; owns 179 acres of land; value of property, $2,500; was County Assessor one year, and Supervisor two years. Married Ruth Barnes in August, 1840, who died in Pennsylvania in 1844. Married Henrietta Reynolds, March 10, 1863, who was born in Livingston, Steuben Co., N.Y., in January, 1834; has six children."

His obituary read: "J. R. Mack, an old and respected citizen, died at Nunda, Jan. 3, 1879. He was favorably known throughout the eastern part of the county. For several years he was a preacher of the Universalist denomination. He was the prime mover in the erection of the Universalist church at McHenry, and was one of the most zealous members of his denomination. His last years were filled with suffering, he being confined to his bed for three years previous to his death. His age was sixty-one years."

In the 1850 census of Center, McHenry, Illinois, was daughter Henrietta Goff, daughter of David Goff and Sarah Goff. In that census, she was listed as born about 1835, in New York. Both of her parents were noted as born in New York. Sarah died May 23, 1888, in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois, age 77. She had 5 sons and 4 daughters.
