Dwight Gilbert Martin

SALISBURY - Mr. Dwight Gilbert Martin, 79, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at his residence, surrounded by all of his family singing "What a Day That Will Be."

He was born July 14, 1935, in Randolph County to the late Walter Crone Martin and Lola Surrat Martin. Dwight attended Farmer School and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during the Korean War, during which he received three medals for his service.

He was employed by Merita Bread for 11 years and later worked for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Company before purchasing Wink's BBQ in Salisbury in 1974, which his family continues to run.

Dwight attended Trinity Wesleyan Church in Salisbury and was an avid saltwater fisherman, enjoying ventures on his boat, "Seawitch." For the last 45 years, he and his entire family enjoyed traveling to Cape Hatteras for fishing trips and vacation. It was a trip that he always looked forward to and always enjoyed.

In addition to his parents, Dwight now joins his three brothers, Walter Jr., Lloyd and Wilber Martin; and sister Mazelle Cranford, who have gone to be with the Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Iris Morgan Martin; children Dwight Kelly Martin (Tabitha), Sharon Martin Doby, Dinah Martin Cordell (Martin) and Byron Martin (Amy).

Grandchildren are Alisha Thompson (Wesley), Jessica White (Jeremy), Matthew Martin (Sheena), Madison Martin, Blain Doby, Mason Doby, Ty Young (Natalia), Nicole Fries (Tyson), Alyssa Cordell, Michael Cordell (Courtney), Cody Ray Cordell, Reece Martin, Hayden Martin and Maksim Martin;

Great-grandchildren include Anders, Brooks and Alli Thompson, Selah and Eden White, Rilynn and Lucas Martin and Abbey Cordell;

And three sisters, including Pat Day (Jim), Jane Martin and Barbara Hopkins (Levon).

Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, Aug. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity Wesleyan Church in Salisbury.

Service: The funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Wesleyan Church, conducted by Rev. Randy Addison, pastor, and Dr. Zachary L. Sizemore.

Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the N.C. National Guard.
