Joseph C. Smith of Norton Shores, age 82. died Saturday evening at a local hospital following a short illness.

Mr. Smith was born December 13, 1917, in Copemish, MI to Joseph & Edith (Terry) Smith, and came to Muskegon as a child where he had since resided.

He married the former Lotus Sturtevant in 1940 and she preceded him in death in 1981.

Joe was a member of the St. Jean's Catholic Church, the Catholic War Vets Post #843, Muskegon Heights Eagles #2106, the Loyal Order of Moose #690, Polish Falcons Nest #276 and Local #113 UAW.

He served in the US Coast Guard from 1937 to 1940 and was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army Air Corps.

Mr. Smith was employed at Teledyne Continental for 38 years until retiring in 1979.

Survivors: a daughter, Cheryl (Bert) Petrie of Pentwater; a sister, Ardath Smith of Muskegon; a son-in-law, George Pratt of Bellaire, MI; 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and his close friend and companion, Josephine Kresnak of Roosevelt Park. He was also preceded in death by a son, Michael in 1986 and a daughter, Susan Pratt in 1995.

Memorial Service: A memorial mass will be held at St. Jean's Catholic Church, Tuesday, 11:00 A.M. Fr. James Wyse, presiding. Memorial Contributions may be made to the church.
