Robert Dale Perry
October 23, 1922 — June 22, 2008
Robert Dale Perry died Sunday, June 22, 2008, in Hillsboro at the age of 85. Robert Dale Perry was born in St. Helens on Oct. 23, 1922, to Dale and Elizabeth Perry. He graduated from Willamette University where he was a member of the varsity basketball and baseball teams. He married Beverly Sherman, the love of his life, in 1943. He served as a B-17 pilot in the South Pacific in World War II.
Bob began teaching in Klamath Falls in 1949. He was a teacher, coach, and counselor at Beaverton High School from 1951 until his retirement in 1983. With his brother George, and Ted Wilson, they started and operated Perry 's Basketball Camp in Vernonia from 1964 to 1980. It was the first facility of that kind built in the Northwest. Thousands of young people went through the week-long program and many adults would later comment that it was one of the greatest weeks of their life. He enjoyed the camaraderie of golf three times a week with friends and had a lucky two holes-in-one. He was a volunteer at the Beaverton Library and at Play It Again, a clothing store for those in need. He also did volunteer work for the Oregon Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, elementary school reading program and the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District.
An avid reader, he had two or three books going at one time. Biographies, authors Keillor, L'Amour and Grisham were his favorite reads. He worked the crossword puzzle each day and became a jigsaw puzzle fan. Bob taught himself to play the piano and was well known for his musical tributes to friends and family. His wit and humor were always present in his daily interactions and writings. Family was of utmost importance to Bob. He helped organize and was the MC of the 100th Annual Perry Family Reunion in St Helens, bringing relatives together from all over the country to share stories and information.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beverly; daughter, Linda and her husband, Cris McMann of Warren; son, Dr. Matthew Perry , and his wife, Debbie of Hillsboro; and three grandchildren, Nick, Natalie and Drew Perry . He was preceded in death by daughters Diane and Robin. Private interment was held at Riverview Abbey in Portland, Oregon. Memorial contributions may be made to KAO, the Kidney Association of Oregon.
A celebration of the good life of Bob Perry will be held at Bethel Congregational United Church of Christ at 5150 S.W. Watson Avenue in Beaverton on July 25, 2008, at 10 a.m. Join us and share a memory or a story about your contact with Bob.
