ERNEST COWELL IS LAID AT REST
SAN FRANCISCO, March 23. The funeral of Ernest V. Cowell, whose death took place at the Lane hospital Saturday, was held yesterday from the residence of his sisters at 2610 Jackson street. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. William K. Guthrie, and a large number of the friends of the deceased, including many of his former classmates at the University of California, attended the obsequies. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Henry Cowell, founder of the Henry Cowell lime and cement company. He was born in this state fifty-three years ago, and was at the time of his death, the president of the Cowell Portland cement company. Since the death of his father, the deceased had, with his brother and W. H. George, conducted the enterprises founded by his parent. These included several lime and cement factories in various sections of the state. He graduated from the University of California with the class of 1880, and he always took an active interest in the affairs of his college. He was especially interested in athletics, and lent substantial aid in promoting sports among the students. He was the founder of the Cowell scholarships which have been the means of educating a number of worthy young men. The deceased is survived by bis widow, Alice M. Cowell; his brother, Samuel Henry Cowell and his two sisters, Isabelle M. and Helen E. Cowell. A sad feature of the event is that his sisters are traveling in Europe at the present time, and although every effort has been made to reach them by cable the attempt has been unsuccessful and they are still in ignorance of their brother's death.
